AUBURNDALE, Fla. -Â The Elmhurst University baseball team opened the 2024 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Saturday morning, narrowly falling 4-5 to Mount St. Joseph University.
Elmhurst (0-8) kept it close, knotting the game at two in the sixth and rallying for another pair of runs in the eighth, but ultimately came up short to Mount St. Joseph (5-9).
Jesse James made the most of his pinch-hitting appearance with a two-run single in the eighth to lead the Bluejays, while
Erik Malott and
Marty Fraga earned Elmhurst's other two RBI.
Freddie March also put forward a multi-hit effort going 2-for-5 in the game.
Starting pitcher
Logan Leach went five strong innings, giving up just four hits and two runs while adding a pair of strikeouts, earning no decision, and
Landon Banaszynski had a strong relief appearance of 2.1 innings giving up no hits and just one walk to keep Elmhurst in the ball game.

Elmhurst will take on Bard College in a doubleheader tomorrow morning, March 17, beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT.
