Women's Wrestlers Take on NCC Invitational

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst University women's wrestling team took on over 41 different teams at the North Central College Invitational on Sunday (Dec. 15) in one of the largest women's wrestling tournaments in the country.

Elmhurst placed 38th in the tough invitational that included teams from all levels of the NCAA and NAIA, with four Bluejays competing in the event. 

RESULTS

110 lbs: Veronica Cosio
Cosio started with a tough loss to Alaina Sunlin (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) by technical fall (10-0). Cosio rebounded in her next match with an exciting 11-10 decision over Rubi Gonzalez (Lyon), earning the team's only points on the day. However, her tournament ended in the consolation bracket with a 9-4 decision loss to Julia Snyder (Rochester).

124 B: Chaanna Kassim
Kassim struggled against tough opponents in her bracket. She was pinned by Natalie Gonzalez (Aurora) in the opening round (1:27). After advancing through a bye in the consolation round, she was eliminated by Sophia Renteria (Adrian College), who won by technical fall (14-4).

160 B: Clara Rice
Rice opened her tournament with a bye but fell to Fabiana Josa (New Jersey City University) in the second round by fall (2:04). After another bye in the consolation bracket, Rice faced Maddie Hall (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and was pinned again, this time at 2:02, ending her tournament run.

160 B: Yareli Ortega
Ortega had a similar experience to her teammate in the same bracket. She received a bye in the first round but was pinned by Izabelle Nelson-Carrillo (Carthage College) in just 1:25 in the second round. Ortega advanced through another bye in the consolation bracket before her day ended with a quick pin by Ryann Reeves (Joliet Junior College) in just 46 seconds.

UP NEXT

The Bluejays are off for winter vacation, and will resume action in the first-ever home women's wrestling dual at R.A. Faganel Hall on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 6:00 p.m. against Manchester University.
