ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst University men's wrestling team dropped a 30-11 decision to Augustana College Wednesday (Nov. 20) afternoon on the road.
The Bluejays fell to 1-2 in overall and CCIW dual action with the loss, while Augie improved to 2-1 with the win.
The Bluejays kept the meet close, only trailing by five team points through seven matches thanks to wins from Donovin Fields, Rhenzo Augusto, and Corey Bradley, but three-straight defeats in the final three matches put the win in the column for the home team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fields opened the meet with a dominant performance at 125, overwhelming Augie's Jack Reina in a 17-2 technical fall, earning the Bluejays an early 5-0 lead. Augie quickly answered back as Khadyn Jacobs delivered an 18-4 major decision over Joe Fornaro at 133, narrowing the lead to 5-4 for Elmhurst. Augie took their first lead of the night with a forfeiture at 141, pushing the Vikings ahead 10-5.
Mikey Rodriguez of Augie edged out Elmhurst's Diego Garcia in an overtime thriller at 149, securing a 7-4 decision after a takedown in sudden victory, extending the Viking lead to 13-5.
Augusto kept the Jays in the hunt with a narrow 9-8 decision over Augie's Michael Macias at 157. Augusto's win brought the score to 13-8 in favor of the Vikings. Augie's Jack Patting controlled the pace in a 7-1 decision over Elmhurst's Mataeo Blessing at 165, widening the Vikings' lead to 16-8.
The Bluejays struck back as Bradley had a hard-fought 15-12 decision over Augie's Jack Miller. Bradley's win at 174 cut the deficit to 16-11, keeping the Bluejays within striking distance.
From there, three-straight Augie victories at 184, 197, and 285 gave the hosts the dual meet victory.
