ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University women's volleyball team took down Wartburg, 3-1, Friday evening in their tournament opener.
Elmhurst (9-8, 1-4 CCIW) had three players with double-digit kills across all three positions in the front row, with a balanced attack pushing them past Wartburg (12-7, 2-0 ARC).
Elise Rossing led the way for the second-straight match with 12 kills, while
Blair Johnson provided 11 kills from the right side. Middle hitter
Keely Larson had 10 kills and three assisted blocks, also collecting four digs.
Jada Wiley and
Gianna Ptaszek provided the defense, colecting 11 digs each.
The Bluejays were strong on both sides of the ball in the first two sets, holding Wartburg to .065% and .027% hitting from the field. On the Elmhurst side, double-digit kills and a few well-timed rallys helped the Jays jump out to a 2-0 match lead.
Set three was all Wartburg, as Elmhurst committed eight errors to just three from the Knights, as the visitors took the third set, 25-19.
The Bluejays started set four with an 8-3 run, extending that lead to 11-4 and later 15-8. With the Bluejays just five points away from the match, Wartburg responded with a 9-3 run to knot the game at 23. From there, Larson and Wiley would slam down kills to give the Bluejays the 25-23 set four win, taking the match three sets to one.
UP NEXT
The Bluejays host the final day of the Elmhurst Invitational on Saturday, October 12, with Elmhurst competing in the invitational finale against UW-River Falls at 3:00 pm.
