WHEATON, Ill. -Â The Elmhurst University softball team hit the road Monday afternoon, sweeping a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games against Wheaton College.
Elmhurst (14-15, 5-5 CCIW) scored late in each game, pulling away for a 6-4 win in game one by scoring four runs in the seventh inning, and pulling away late in game two to win, 4-3, and sweep the season series against Wheaton (6-25, 1-12 CCIW).
The Bluejays move back to .500 in the CCIW for the first time since April 15, using a strong pair of pitching outings in both games to do so.
In game one, the Thunder went back ahead in the sixth inning by a score of 3-2, threatening to win the game with three outs remaining. However, an offensive burst from Elmhurst saw four runs cross the plate, and despite a run in the bottom half of the inning, the Bluejays still grabbed the 6-4 victory in the opener.
Chiara O'Leary pitched a complete-game for Elmhurst, giving up four runs and adding four strikeouts to improve to 6-6 on the season. At the plate,
Ali Mockenhaupt and
Maddie Trost each tallied a pair of RBI in game one, matching each others lines with a 2-for-4 effort.
In game two, the Thunder scored two early runs in the second and third inning to jump ahead again, but a run in the third and a bases clearing, three RBI double from Trost in the fifth opened a 4-2 lead for the Bluejays. Despite a late rally from the Thunder in the seventh that saw the Bluejay lead cut to just one, the Bluejays were able to fend off Wheaton and take game two of the day.
Brianna Pisauro pitched all seven innings for the Bluejays, giving up 11 hits but only three runs to earn the win and improve to 7-6 on the season in the circle. At the plate, Trost again led the Bluejays with a three-RBI double in the fifth inning, her only hit of the contest.Â
