CLERMONT, Fla. -Â The Elmhurst University softball team picked up a victory over Bates College, while falling to Colby College in a split doubleheader on the penultimate day of the team's Florida trip.
Elmhurst (6-5, 0-0 CCIW) started the day with a barn burner of a game against Bates College, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage through three innings, but a storm of runs in the fourth inning from Bates saw the designated visiting team take an 8-7 lead. In the sixth, Elmhurst gained a bases-loaded walk to knot the game at eight before another trio of runs in the sixth inning helping the Bluejays surge past Bates College.
Three different Bluejays knocked in multiple RBI in the contest, with
Reese Coon's 3-for-4 effort leading the way.
Hannah Dunk knocked in two RBI and a double in a 2-for-4 line, while
Chiara O'Leary went 2-for-3 with two RBI's in the game.
In the circle, O'Leary started the game and pitched just three innings, but a strong outing from
Ali Mockenhaupt gave the freshman pitcher her first victory of the season after four innings of scoreless softball, giving up just three hits and recording one strikeout.
In game two of the day, a back-and-forth affair early showed promise for a competitive game, but six runs between the fourth and fifth innings for Colby College ultimately sealed the Bluejays' fate in a 3-7 loss.
The Bluejays jumped ahead 1-0 in the first before Colby knotted the game in their half of the opening inning. From there, the Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage. However, Colby scored four runs in their half of the fourth, and another pair of runs in the fifth inning to take the victory in the second game of the day for Elmhurst.
Coon, O'Leary, and
Julia Noga tallied the lone hits for the Bluejays in the contest, while
Maddie Trost added an RBI for Elmhurst. In the circle,
Brianna Pisauro took the loss after giving up ten hits and five runs (four earned runs) with a pair of strikeouts, but freshman pitcher
Megan Wilson enjoyed a good performance in the circle, pitching a scoreless and hitless inning in the sixth.Â
