AUBURNDALE, Fla. -Â The Elmhurst University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Hobart College on Monday, March 20, with both games ending with a final score of 8-5.
Elmhurst (6-7, 0-0 CCIW) went down early in game one, trailing 2-0 through two innings, before an eight-run burst at the plate in the next four innings put the Bluejays ahead 8-2. Despite three runs in the top half of the seventh for Hobart, Elmhurst was able to fend off Hobart and take the opening victory in the doubleheader.
Troy Taller led the way for the Bluejays at the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, with both hits gaining extra bases with a double and a triple.
Trey Romay and
Michael Campanaro both knocked two RBI, while
Jesse James and
Drew Raspolich added a RBI for the Elmhurst offense.
On the mound,
Eric Zbinden started the game and pitched four innings, giving up just two runs and striking out three batters before being relieved by
Cody Baker in the fifth inning in a tie game. Baker earned the win for the Bluejays despite giving up three runs in the contest, sitting down two batters via strikeout across the final three innings of the game.
In game two, the Bluejays again dug themselves an early hole and trailed 3-0 after the first inning of play. However, the bats woke up again in the middle innings,scoring two runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead and two more in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final inning. Hobart again rallied late with two runs in the sixth, but
Logan Leach entered the game late and earned his first save of the season to secure the 8-5 Elmhurst victory.Â
Erik Mallot led the way at the plate in game two, tallying three RBI in a 2-for-4 effort. Raspolich again contributed a pair of RBI and a walk in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while
Freddie March added the other RBI for the Bluejays in the contest.
Joseph Ingratta started the game for the Bluejays, giving up four runs (three earned) before being relieved by
Davis Maifield in the fourth inning. Maifield worked out of a jam in the fourth to keep the Bluejays in the lead, earning his first win of the season on the mound, giving up two runs across 2.2 innings pitched.
