VIRDEN, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team dropped a 1-2 decision in 10 innings at Blackburn College Sunday afternoon.
Elmhurst (1-2, 0-0 CCIW) used strong outings on the mound from
Troy Taller andÂ
Cody Baker to keep the game at bay, but Blackburn (1-3) was able to come out triumphant in the contest thanks to a tenth-inning, walk-off solo home run.
Taller started the game, going six innings and giving up five hits, one run, and two walks while adding five strikeouts. Baker came on in relief and spun three scoreless innings, giving up no hits and three walk with a strikeout.
At the plate,
Brett Bishop provided the lone run for the Bluejays, a solo shot in the second inning, while
Trey Romay went 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk in the contest.
Blackburn started the scoring in the first, scurrying a run across the plate on a double-steal, catching the runner at second but letting the run score to make it 1-0 for the home team. The Bluejays responded in the net half inning, with Bishop leading off the inning with a solo home run to left field to knot the game at one.
From there, both teams threatened multiple times, but ultimately no runs came across, forcing the game to extra innings. Elmhurst threatened with a pair of two-out walks in the tenth, but nothoing came of the rally. Blackburn then responded with a solo home run to leadoff the bottom of the tenth, giving the Beavers their first win of the season.

Elmhurst will be back in Jacksonville, Ill. next weekend, Mar. 4 and 5, playing both Olivet College and Central College twice on the weekend.
