Bluejays Rally Past Stars in Five Sets

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Dominican University 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-8 at R.A. Faganel Hall.
 
Elmhurst evened its record at 2-2 while Dominican slipped to 2-2 on the season following the loss. The win gave Elmhurst Head Coach Cameron Andrew a victory over the team he coached last season.
 
Elmhurst struggled out of the gate, falling behind 15-11 in the opening set. Dominican led by as many as six points and the Bluejays came no closer than three points for the remainder of the set as the Stars grabbed the early 1-0 lead. Elmhurst committed 12 hitting errors in the opening set.
 
Dominican jumped out to an early lead in the second set, building a 12-6 advantage and never looking back. Elmhurst closed to within two points at 16-14, but the Stars used a 6-1 run to open up a 22-15 lead on route to taking the second set.
 
Elmhurst got rolling in the third set, opening up a 14-11 lead only to have Dominican rally back with a 7-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. Elmhurst responded with an 8-2 run to open up a 23-20 lead. A kill from Elise Rossing gave the Bluejays the set at 25-22.
 
Dominican grabbed an early 10-7 lead in the fourth set, but the Bluejays used an 8-2 run to move in front at 15-12. Dominican shave Elmhurst's lead down to just one point at 16-15 and two points at 21-19, but the Bluejays closed the set with a 5-1 run to force a decisive fifth set.
 
The Bluejays dominated in the final set, scoring the first four points and never trailing. Elmhurst led 8-3 at the side change before Dominican rattled off three straight points to close to within two points at 8-6. The Bluejays finished the set with a 7-2 run. A block from Kali Phillips and Keely Larson finished the match for the Bluejays.
 
Elmhurst finished the contest hitting .250 with 70 kills and 27 errors in 172 attempts. Jada Wiley powered the Bluejays in the victory, tallying a career-high 21 kills while hitting .326 for the match. She added 19 digs, three aces and a pair of blocks in the victory. Lacey Kaiser added 16 kills while hitting .316 for the contest. Phillips tallied 10 kills and three blocks while Larson finished with eight kills and four blocks while hitting a team-lading .429. Rossing added nine kills for the Bluejays. Kellyn Kennedy finished with 30 assists while Erin Murray tallied 28 for the Bluejays. Payton Ceh totaled team highs in both digs (21) and aces (five).
 
Dominican hit .207 for the match with 46 kills and 15 errors in 150 attempts. Cassidy Spires and Emily Schellhase totaled 12 kills apiece for the Stars. Spires added 19 digs while Schellhase totaled 13.
 
Elmhurst opens CCIW play by hosting Millikin University on September 14.
