Volleyball Team Splits Two at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University volleyball team opened the 2022 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Lake Forest Invitational. The Bluejays toppled Mount Mary University 3-0 before falling to the Illinois Institute of Technology in the nightcap. 

ELMHURST 3, MOUNT MARY 0 - Elmhurst opened the 2022 campaign by making short work of Mount Mary, winning 25-8, 25-13, 25-16. 

Elmhurst raced out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set and never trailed on route to taking a quick 1-0 lead. With the score tied at 4-4 in the second, Elmhurst rattled off the next seven points to take control before cruising to the 25-13 win. Mount Mary jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set before Elmhurst pulleve even at 13-13. The Bluejays closed the set on a 12-3 run to put away the match. 

Elmhurst hit . 396 as a team, finishing with 44 kills and eight errors in 91 attempts. Elise Rossing and Keely Larson led the Bluejays with eight kills apiece. Lacey Kaiser added seven kills while Ally Severino finished with five. Erin Murray tallied 17 assists while Kali Phillips totaled 25. Payton Ceh led the Bluejays with 10 digs.

IIT 3, ELMHURST 0 - Elmhurst dropped to 1-1 on the season after dropping a 29-27, 25-18, 25-17 contet to the Illinois Institute of Technology. 

The opening set featured 15 ties and five lead changes before IIT toppled the Bluejays 29-27. IIT built a 10-4 lead in the second set before Elmhurst pulled even at 12-12. IIT responded with an 8-1 run to open things up before taking the second set. The Bluejays fell behind early in the third set, but cut the deficit down to two points at 12-10, but a 4-0 from IIT helped the Scarlet Hawks pull away for the win. 

Elmhurst hit only .019 in the contest, tallying 27 kills and 25 errors in 106 attempts. Jada Wiley paced Elmhurst in the loss with seven kills. Rossing and Larson added six kills apiece for Elmhurst. Murray added 15 assists while Phillips finished with seven. 
Ceh added a team-leading 10 digs while Nyah Moustakas led Elmhurst with four blocks. Phillips added three blocks for the Bluejays in the loss. 

Elmhurst hosts the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday, September 6.
