ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's tennis team opened its 2022-23 season by defeating McHenry County College 6-3 at the Brune Tennis Courts. 

Elmhurst (1-0) fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. The Bluejays' No. 1 pairing of Brandon Fulmer and Ben Cavka defeated Andrew Burkey at Jack Coleman 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, McHenry's Nick Belgrave and Riley Ellegood downed Russell Reyes and Adrian Songco 8-4 at No. 2. McHenry earned a win by injury default at No. 3 doubles. 

In singles play, the Bluejays won five of the six matches to take the contest. Burkey accounted for McHenry's only win, defeting Fulmer 6-4, 2-6, 13-11 at No.1. Cavka scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ellegood at No. 2 while Reyes toppled Coleman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Lukas Cepronas scored a 7-6, 7-6 win over Belgrave at No. 4 while Yannis Varsamis defeated Cory Freed 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5. Songco scored a 6-0, 7-6 win over Payton Smith at No. 6 singles. 

Elmhurst hosts Concordia University-Chicago on Thursday, September 15.
