NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback on the road at regionally-ranked North Central College.
The matches were played indoors at the Naperville Tennis Club due to the rain. Elmhurst fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in league play with the Cardinals improved to 17-2 on the year.
North Central swept the three doubles matches to open the day. Javier Suarez and Morgan Red defeated Elmhurst's
Russell Reyes and
Yannis Varsamis 8-0 at No. 3. Ramon Vilarroig and Guillermo Gonzalez stopped Elmhurst's
Ben Cavka and
Justin Penados 8-2 at No. 2 while Colten Way and Andy Hinch downed Elmhurst's No. 2 duo of
Tomas Bella and Brandon Fullmer 8-2.
In singles play, Red opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Reyes at No. 5 while Vilarroig scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bella at No. 1 to clinch the match for the Cardinals. Suarez upended Penados 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 while Hinch stopped Varsamis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Elmhurst had two matches go the distance in the defeat. Way held off Cavka at No. 3 by scores of 6-3, 5-7, 10-5. Matthew Sengphommachanh rallied to defeat Fullmer 1-6, 6-2, 12-10 at No. 4.
Elmhurst hosts Carroll University on Friday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m.
