Softball Team Falls at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks at Carthage College, falling 4-1 and 7-4 to the Firebirds. 

CARTHAGE 4, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Carthage scored the first four runs of the game and pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning to score a 4-1 win in game one of the doubleheader.

The Firebirds scored a run on a passed ball in the first inning. Alaina Azar drove in a run in the second and added another in the fourth to increase Carthage's lead to 3-0. The Firebirds added another run in the fifth to move in front 4-0. 

Elmhurst (6-15/0-6 CCIW) ended the shutout in the sixth. With two on and two out, Julia Noga delivered a RBI single to center to put Elmhurst on the scoreboard. The Bluejays brought the tying run to the plate, but Carthage ended the threat with a strikeout. 

Reese Coon led the Bluejays at the plate, collecting two of Elmhurst's five hits. 

Chiara O'Leary made the start in the circle and went the distance while taking the loss. She scattered seven hits and just two earned runs over six innings. She walked three and fanned two. Naomi Alonzo earned the win for Carthage, pitching a complete game and allowing just five hits and one run. Alonzo walked two and fanned six. 

CARTHAGE 7, ELMHURST 4 (Game Two) - Carthage scored four runs in the fifth inning and then held off an Elmhurst rally to finish the doubleheader sweep. 

Carthage grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first but Elmhurst pulled even in the second after Maddie Trost scored on a passed ball. The Firebirds scored a run in the third and then added four runs in the fifth to open up a 6-1 lead. 

Elmhurst sliced into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Orel knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly and Jena Hicks drove in a run on a ground out. 

Carthage pushed its lead back to four with a run in the sixth, but Coon trippled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 7-4. 

Coon and Jamie Haas collected two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the loss. 

Sydni Gizynski made the start for the Bluejays and took the loss. She allowed 10 hits and five earned runs over five innings of work. She walked five and struck out five. 

Elmhurst travels to Augustana College on Saturday, April 16.
