Baseball Drops CCIW Openers to Wheaton

CAROL STREAM, Ill. - The Elmhurst University baseball team opened the CCIW portion of its schedule by dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Wheaton College. The Bluejays fell 17-6 in game one and came up short 5-4 in game two. 

Elmhurst slipped to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in league play while Wheaton moved to 5-11 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW. 

WHEATON 17, ELMHURST 6 (Game One) - Elmhurst led 6-5 at the midway point of the contest, but Wheaton outscored the Bluejays 12-0 the rest of the way to pull away for the 17-6 victory. 

Trailing 3-0 after one inning, the Bluejays scored four runs in the second to move in front. Jonathan Mays started the scoring with a RBI single. Trey Romay followed with a bases-clearing, three-run double. 

Wheaton answered back with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 4-4. The Thunder pushed home a run in the fourth to grab a 5-4 cushion, but Elmhurst went back in front 6-5 in the top of the fifth on a two-run double from Freddie March

Wheaton scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and added four runs in the sixth and three runs in the eight to pull away for the 11-run victory.

Romay finished with a pair of hits and drove in three to lead Elmhurst at the plate. 

Alex Kielion made the start and took the loss, surrendering 10 hits and 10 runs over 4.2 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. 

WHEATON 5, ELMHURST 4 (Game Two) - Elmhurst outhit Wheaton 9-6, but the Thunder scored three runs in the seventh to pull ahead for one-run victory. 

Wheaton grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third. Elmhurst cut the lead in half with a Ben Bishop RBI groundout in the fourth. Drew Raspolich put the Bluejays in front two innings later, doubling home a pair of runs to give Elmhurst a 3-2 lead. 

The Thunder scored three times in the seventh to move in front 5-3. Elmhurst took a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Troy Taller sacrifice fly. The Bluejays had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Romay was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Paul Fomby hit. 

Jaysn Miller made the start and took a no decision , working 6.1 innings and allowing just three hits and two earned runs. He walked four and struck out seven. Cole Bozzi took the loss in relief, surrendering three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings. He walked one and fanned five. 

Elmhurst and Wheaton are scheduled to play a single game on Saturday, April 2, at Butterfield Park. Game-time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
