ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's tennis team opened its spring season by erasing a 4-1 deficit to rally past Wartburg University for a 5-4 victory.
Elmhurst (1-1) fell behind 2-1 after the doubles matches.
Tomas Bella and Justin Pendaos defeated Wartburg's No. 1 duo of Lucas Huffman and Jackson Ellis 8-5. Wartburg's Cade Davis and Griffin Steiniger downed
Ben Cavka and
Florin Stan 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. The Knight's duo of Nile Petersen and Kyle Sehlin stopped
Russell Reyes and Brandon Fullmer 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Steiniger stopped Reyes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 while Huffman defeated Bella 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 to give Wartburg a 4-1 lead. Stan upended Petersen 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 while Fulmer rallied from a set down to defeat Sehlin 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6. Cavka evened the score at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ellis at No. 3 singles. Penados finished off Davis 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 to give Elmhurst the victory.
Elmhurst takes on Lake Forest College on Friday, February 25.
