ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team came up short against Carthage College dropping the contest, 64-55, at R.A. Faganel.
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle and nearly ended in an 18-18 tie, but a buzzer-beater three pointer by Elena Knebel gave Carthage (3-4/1-0 CCIW) a three-point lead heading into the second period.
Both squads scored 14 points apiece before the half for the Firebirds to hold onto their three-point lead heading into the locker room.
Elmhurst (1-6/0-2 CCIW) was outscored 29-23 in the second half in route to a nine-point loss.
The Bluejays were led by
Taylor Harazin who posted a double-double featuring 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Anna Kleszynski added in 12 points and eight boards, while
Marissa Mussatto chipped in 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Leading the way for Carthage were Ayanna Ester and Marianna Morrissey with 10 points apiece and two and seven rebounds respectively. Lauren Knight followed closely behind with nine points of her own, while Bridget Barrett chipped in seven points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds for the Firebirds in the win.
Elmhurst fared better from the field shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) compared to Carthage's 31.9 percent (22-of-69). From behind the arc shooting the Bluejays outshot the Firebirds 31.8 percent (7-of-22) to 30.0 percent (9-of-30).
