ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team earned its first win of the season over Dominican University, 74-61, at R.A. Faganel Hall.
The Bluejays (1-4) held a dominating 26-10 lead after the opening quarter. The Stars were able to chip away and get to within nine points multiple times throughout the second quarter, but
Payton Schmidt helped extend the Elmhurst lead back to 12 with a three-pointer with just 11 seconds remaining before the break.
Dominican (0-4) scored just one less point in the second half, but was unable to overcome the Bluejays lead from the first half.
Elmhurst was led by
Ella Riley who scored a career-high 20 points off of six three-pointers.
Taylor Harazin followed closely behind with a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Kendall Schieppe chipped in 14 points in the win.
Katie Matrise and Riley led the team with five assists apiece.
Toni Hayes led the Stars offensively scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while Kameron Goodman finished with 13 points and eight boards in the loss. Payton Allen added in 11 points of her own, while Kamryn Woods posted nine points.
The Bluejays shot 38.8 percent (31-of-80) from the field compared to the Stars who shot 29.2 percent (19-of-65). Elmhurst shot 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from downtown, while Dominican shot 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from beyond the arc.
