Football Struggles Against WashU

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University football team fell 49-6 to Washington University in St. Louis at Langhorst Field.

The Bears scored 21 unanswered points before Jacob Cockrell caught a 30-yard pass from Matt Xiques with 5:26 left in the second quarter to put the Bluejays on the board.

Elmhurst (0-8/0-7 CCIW) headed into the locker room at the half down 28-6.

WashU (7-1/6-1 CCIW) added three more touchdowns in the second half to walk away with a 49-6 road victory.

Elmhurst totaled six first downs and 122 passing yards in 54 plays, while WashU totaled 27 first downs, 144 rushing yards and 354 passing yards in 82 plays in the contest.

Matt Xiques completed 7-of-20 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. Isaiah Presley and Zach Norman each rushed for seven yards, while Gabe Holtke caught four passes for 45 yards. Cockrell added in two receptions for 43 yards as well for the Bluejays.

Bryce Gable led the Bluejay defense with 17 tackles and one sack, while Jake Masco chipped in 12 tackles and a sack in the loss.

Ryan Brenner punted 12 times for 423 yards for Elmhurst, averaging 35.2 yards per punt.

Matt Rush completed 24-of-35 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns. Kenneth Hamilton led the Bears on the ground rushing 64 yards in seven carries, while Fred Ware added in 61 rushing yards in 12 carries. Collin Hoyhtya caught six passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Following closely behind was Cole Okmin who tallied four receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown.

Gus Christensen led the WashU defense with five tackles, while Xander Georgoulis finished with three tackles and one sack.

Andrew Grisack punted five times for 212 yards for the Bears, averaging 42.3 yards per punt.

The Bluejays travel to North Park for their next matchup against the Vikings on Saturday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m.
