ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst University volleyball team scored its fifth consecutive victory by dispatching Augustana College 25-12, 25-20, 25-16 at R.A. Faganel Hall.
Elmhurst (6-6/2-1 CCIW) controlled the match from the start. Trailing 4-3 at the start of the first set, the Bluejays rattled off a 6-2 run to go in front 9-6. The Bluejays won the next four points behind
Emily Finkbeiner's serve to extend their lead to 14-6 and never looked back. Elmhurst opened up a 12-point cushion before a kill from
Jada Wiley gave the Bluejays the 25-12 win in the first set.
The second-set was tightly contested and featured 12 ties and six lead changes. Elmhurst opened up an 18-14 lead before Augustana pulled to within a point at 19-18 and again at 20-19. The Bluejays finished the set with a 5-1 run to go in front 2-0.
Elmhurst opened up a quick 8-3 lead in the third only to have Augustana (4-13/0-2 CCIW) pull even at 10-all. The Bluejays responded with a 5-1 run to go in front at 15-11. The Vikings closed to within a point at 16-15, but the Bluejays responded by winning the next three points to push their lead back to four points. After Augustana made it 20-16, the Bluejays scored the final five points to close out the set and the match.
Elmhurst hit .185 for the match with 37 kills and 14 errors in 124 attempts.
Taylor Zurliene led the way for Elmhurst, finishing with 10 kills and 22 digs. Wiley added nine kills while
Emily Duis totaled seven kills and five blocks.
Elise Rossing chipped in with six kills and three blocks.
Erin Murray finished with 28 assists and four blocks.
Valerie Thomas added 12 digs and three aces for the Bluejays.
Augustana was led by Brook Feldman's 10 kills and 11 digs. Emily Schipper added six kills for the Vikings.
The Bluejays host the Elmhurst University Invitational this weekend (October 1-2) at R.A. Faganel Hall.
