Softball Team Splits Two With Carroll

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University softball team split a doubleheader with Carroll University at Salt Creek Park. The Bluejays dropped game one 10-4 but bounced back to win the night cap 4-2.
 
Elmhurst moved to 9-13 overall and 7-9 in the CCIW with the split while Carroll moved to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.  
 
CARROLL 10, ELMHURST 4 (Game One) – Carroll banged out 17 hits while upending Elmhurst 10-4 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
 
The Pioneers scored three times in the second inning to open up an early lead. RBIs from Claudia Spencer, Maria Mundy and Kaylee Learman accounted for Carroll's quick start. The Pioneers made it 4-0 in the third following Megan Funk's RBI double.

Elmhurst responded in the third, cashing in on a Carroll error to score four unearned runs. Alana Batista drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first Elmhurst run. Jamie Haas delivered a two-run, two-out single to make the score 4-3 and Mia Riese singled to left field to knot the score at 4-4.
 
Carroll reclaimed the lead with a four-run fourth inning. The Pioneers collected four hits in the inning while sending 10 batters to the plate. Carroll tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to make the final score 10-4.
 
Elmhurst was limited to only five hits in the contest. Veronica Zahn and Mia Riese finished with two hits apiece for the Bluejays.
 
Learman paced Carroll with three hits while Bridget Rath and Funk also collected three hits each. Rath scored three runs while Spencer drove in three for the Pioneers.
 
Karly Krown suffered the loss in relief, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing nine hits and five earned runs. She walked one and fanned one. Amanda Osterhus pitched a complete game for the Pioneers, tossing seven innings and allowing just four unearned runs. She walked four and struck out 14.
 
ELMHURST 4, CARROLL 2 (Game Two) – Elmhurst rallied from an early deficit to defeat Carroll 4-2 and salvage the doubleheader split.
 
Carroll took a quick 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice grounder from Rath in the top of the first. The Bluejays pulled even at 1-1 in the third, taking advantage of a Carroll error to score an unearned run. Jackie Orel came through with a two-out single to drive in Zahn.
 
Elmhurst took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Briana Pisauro delivered a clutch, two-out single to drive in Mia Rise and put Elmhurst up 2-1.
 
Carroll pulled even at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a two-out, RBI double from Spencer. Elmhurst reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Orel walked to lead off the inning and Jamie Haas followed with a bunt single. Riese singled through the left side to drive in Orel and Pisauro drove in a round on a ground out to give Elmhurst a 4-2 lead which they held for the remainder of the contest.
 
Haas, Riese and Pisauro all collected two hits apiece for the Bluejays.
 
Pisauro picked up the win from the circle, working all seven innings to improve to 5-5 on the year. She scattered nine hits and one earned run over seven innings.
 
Elmhurst plays at Augustana College on Wednesday, April 14.
