ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University softball team slipped to 5-3 in the CCIW after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Wheaton College. Elmhurst fell 17-1 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
Elmhurst moved to 7-7 overall after the two losses. Wheaton improved to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the CCIW.
WHEATON 17, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) – Elmhurst was limited to just one hit and Wheaton used a pair of big innings to cruise to a 17-1 win over the Bluejays in game.
Wheaton jumped in front quickly, striking for five runs on six hits in the opening inning.
Elmhurst took a run back in the bottom of the first as
Alana Batista delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to score
Mia Riese.
The Thunder blew the game open in the third, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs on seven hit and four Elmhurst errors.
Batista collected the only Elmhurst hit in the loss. Briana Pisauro took the loss from the circle, allowing 15 hits and eight earned runs over four innings. She struck out four in the loss.
WHEATON 4, ELMHURST 3 (Game Two) – Wheaton used a walk-off two-run single from Paige Andrews to topple the Bluejays 4-3 in game two.
Wheaton struck first again, scoring two runs in the top of the first, sparked by a Claire Busch RBI double.
Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the top of the second, scoring a run on a
Lauren Polich RBI single.
The Bluejays caught a break in the top of the fifth.
Veronica Zahn hit a comebacker back to the pitcher, but the ball was thrown into the ground, allowing Zahn to reach second. Wheaton went to the bullpen and brought in Emilie Gist.
Alyssa Filkowski crushed a two-run homer to left center to give Elmhurst a 3-2 lead.
With little daylight left, Elmhurst retired the first batter in the bottom of the fifth. Three straight singles loaded the bases for the Thunder before Andrews singled up the middle to drive in two runs and give the Thunder the walk-off win. The game was called after the runs scored due to darkness.
Filkowski recorded two hits and drove in two to lead the Bluejays at the plate.
Karly Krown made the start and took the loss. Krown worked 4.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and four runs.
Elmhurst travels to Carroll University on Friday, April 2.
