ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team dropped a nail-biter to Lake Forest College, falling 6-3 to open the 2021 season.
Lake Forest (1-2) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches. Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk and Chase Garber stopped Elmhurst's duo of
Justin Penados and
Brandon Fulmer 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The Bluejays scored the point at No. 2 doubles when
Shawn Sabaricos and
Ben Cavka downed Aidan Burke and Zach Cho 8-3. Jacob Tilton and Brany Christensen blanked Elmhurst's
Florin Stan and
Jorge Duran 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Oliver Gallego stopped Duran 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to put the Foresters up 3-2, but Stan scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over Burke at No. 3 singles and Fulmer dispatched Cho 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to pull Elmhurst even at 3-3. Vyshyvanyuk put Lake Forest back in front by a point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Penados at No. 1.
The match came down to a pair of three-set contests at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Tilton rallied from a set down to defeat Cavka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles while Garber held off Sabaricos 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, clinching the match for Lake Forest.
Elmhurst plays at Carroll University on Sunday, March 28.
