KENOSHA, Wis.- The Elmhurst women's basketball squad topped Carthage 65-62 to secure a CCIW road victory.
The Bluejays came out hot, shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to build a 22-14 lead in the first quarter. In a back-and-forth second quarter the Firebirds edged the Bluejays 15-13, but still trailed Elmhurst 35-29 at the end of the first half.
Carthage tied the game up at 41-41 with four minutes left in the third quarter but Elmhurst responded and held a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. With five minutes left to play the Firebirds went on a 5-0 run to pull to within two at 62-60 with two minutes remaining. After a layup from
Elena Cabrera with 36 seconds left the Bluejays held a three-point lead at 65-62. After a Carthage timeout with 16 seconds left,
Payton Schmidt caused a turnover and Elmhurst was able to run out the clock, securing the 65-62 victory.
The Bluejays were led by
Courtney O'Donnell's 15 points and six rebounds.
Elena Cabrera added 12 points and two rebounds of her own.
Kelly Weyhrich recorded nine points, four rebounds, five assists, and four steals on the night.
Katelyn Matrise and
Jocelyn Jacob each added six points in the win. Elmhurst shot 49 percent (23-of-47) from the field, 50 percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 56 percent (9-of-16) from the foul line.
The Firebirds were led by Kelsey Coshun's 19 points and seven rebounds. Margueret Spear added 10 points and two rebounds. Amanda Larson and Bridget Barrett added nine points apiece and combined for 14 rebounds. Carthage shot 36 percent (19-of-53) from the field, 25 percent (5-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 73 percent (19-of-26) from the foul line.
