DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball squad dropped its second-straight contest to Millikin University, falling on the road 70-59.
The Bluejays (2-8) got off to a slow start in the first quarter, allowing the Big Blue (7-3) to pop off an 8-0 run and hold a 28-9 lead after 10 minutes. Elmhurst shot 44 percent from the field to edge Millikin 17-11 in the second quarter and found themselves trailing 39-26 at halftime.
After trading shots throughout most of the third quarter the Bluejays were able to cut the Big Blue's lead down to 13 points (56-43) after three quarters. Elmhurst was unable to come any closer than an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, falling to the Big Blue 70-59.
Elmhurst was led by
Kelly Weyhrich's 11 points and eight rebounds.
Marissa Urso recorded 11 points and three rebounds on the day.
Katelyn Matrise and
Payton Schmidt each totaled eight points and combined for four rebounds. The Bluejays shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the field and 82 percent (14-of-17) from the foul line.
Millikin was led by Elyce Knudsen's 14 points and four rebounds. Aubrey Staton recorded 12 points and three rebounds. Jordan Hildebrand added 11 points and five rebounds of her own. The Big Blue shot 43 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 39 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc, and 72 percent from the foul line.
Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Thursday, February 25.
