Men's Hoops Team Wins Third Straight

DECATUR, Ill. – The Elmhurst University men's basketball team rattled off its third consecutive victory by defeating Millikin University 76-64 on the road.

Elmhurst (3-1) raced out to an early lead, scoring the game's first 11 points and holding an 11-point cushion with 6:42 remaining in the opening half. Millikin used an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to slice the Bluejays' advantage down to just two points. The Big Blue came as close as a point in the final seconds, but a Jay Militello bucket gave Elmhurst a 36-33 lead at the half.
 
Millikin started strong in the second half, using a 9-2 run to open up a four-point lead at 42-38 just three minutes into the half. Elmhurst pulled even at 48-48 with 11:39 remaining and the Bluejays followed with a 9-2 run to take a 57-50 lead with 8:30 left to play. Millikin closed the deficit back to four points with 3:38 left, but Elmhurst finished the contest with a 10-2 run to pull away for the 12-point victory.
 
The Bluejays enjoyed a strong shooting night, hitting 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the floor and 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from three-point distance. The Bluejays outscored the Big Blue 42-34 in the paint and enjoyed a 38-31 edge on the glass.
 
Millikin shot 37.5 percent from the field (24-of-64) and just 24.0 percent (6-of-25) from long distance. The Big Blue converted nine offensive rebounds in 12 second chance points and also took advantage of 12 Elmhurst turnovers to score 17 points.
 
Dominic Genco led Elmhurst in the win, scoring a career-high 22 points while shooting 9-of-12 from the floor. Ocean Johnson added 17 points, hitting 6-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Jay Militello added 12 points and eight rebounds while Lavon Thomas totaled nine points, six boards and a team-leading five assists. Jonathan Zapinski came off the bench to total nine points and six rebounds for the Bluejays.
 
Millikin's strongest efforts came from its reserves, as the Big Blue bench outscored Elmhurst's bench 42-16. Scott Gowan and Jarius Ingram both came off the bench to score 13 points apiece. Cole Laurence added 12 points off the bench for Millikin.
