Bluejays Fall in CCIW Opener

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team fell in its CCIW debut to Wheaton College 75-57. 

The Bluejays (1-7) started the first quarter strong with two three-pointers by Cate Boling and Marissa Mussatto to take a 6-0 lead.

The Thunder (8-1) chipped away and tied the score at eight with 2:35 left in the first period. Wheaton then added two free throws and a layup to take a 12-8 lead before the end of the first 10 minutes of play. Wheaton held onto its four-point lead with both teams scoring 15 points apiece in the second resulting in a 27-23 halftime score.

Elmhurst had its highest scoring quarter of the game after the half posting 19 points, however, Wheaton added 23 points to its score giving them an eight-point lead (50-42) with one quarter left to play.

The Thunder outscored the Bluejays 25-15 in the final period to secure their first win in conference play.

Elmhurst finished the contest with three players in double-figures. Leading the pack was Taylor Harazin who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Matrise came in off the bench to add 12 points, while Morgan Collar chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.

Wheaton had four players finish with double-figures. Hannah Swider recorded a game-high 16 points and added three blocks and three steals. Annie Tate chipped in 15 points and six rebounds, while teammate Caylee Hermanson added 13 points and eight rebounds. Caroline Sikkink was the last member of the Thunder squad who had 11 points and three rebounds.

The Thunder shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the field, while the Bluejays shot 32.7 percent (16-of-49).

Elmhurst is back in action on Wednesday, December 8 at R.A. Faganel Hall to take on Millikin University.
