ELMHURST, Ill. – Three players reached double figures in scoring, but the Elmhurst University women's basketball team suffered a 91-55 loss to Carroll University at R.A. Faganel Hall.
The first quarter was back-and-forth as Carroll jumped out to a quick lead only to have the Bluejays move back in front at 8-6. The Pioneers led by four (14-10) with under three minutes to play, but back-to-back three pointers from
Katie Matrise and
Payton Schmidt put Elmhurst in front by a bucket with two minutes remaining. The Bluejays led 16-12 after the opening quarter.
Elmhurst (1-10/0-4 CCIW) scored the opening bucket of the second quarter to open a six-point lead, but Carroll took over using a 15-2 run to open up a seven-point cushion with three minutes remaining. The Pioneers pushed their lead up to 14 points in the final minutes and carried a 40-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Carroll (6-3/1-3 CCIW) pulled away in the second half, outscoring Elmhurst 26-4 in the third quarter while blowing the game open. The Pioneers 66-33 after 30 minutes. Elmhurst had its most productive quarter of the contest in the fourth, scoring 22 points as the Bluejays fell 91-55.
Elmhurst shot 37.5 percent from the floor, hitting 21-of-56 attempts. The Bluejays hit on 6-of-21 attempts from beyond the arc (28.6 percent). Carroll finished the contest shooting 55.2 percent (37-of-67) from the floor. The Pioneers did their damage inside, outscoring Elmhurst 60-26 in the paint and outrebounding the Bluejays 43-22.
Taylor Harazin led Elmhurst in the loss with 11 points and six rebounds.
Marissa Urso and
Katie Matrise scored 10 points apiece for the Bluejays while
Morgan Collar scored eight.
Brooke Foster led Carroll in the win with 14 points. Elizabeth Behrndt tallied 10 points and seven rebounds while Chloe Halverson finished with 10 points.
Elmhurst hosts Coe College on Monday, December 20, at 2:00 p.m.
