CHICAGO, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team came up short against Bethany Lutheran College dropping the contest 63-46 in the first game of the North Park Tournament.
The Bluejays (0-5) scored the first eight points of the contest and led by one at the end of the first quarter.
At the half, the Vikings (4-1) had taken the lead, 23-21. Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the third quarter and were in front by seven with 56 seconds left after
Morgan Collar hit a bucket. Bethany Lutheran scored five points in the final 40 seconds to shrink the Bluejays' lead to two (38-36) after three quarters.
The Vikings scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach, outscoring Elmhurst 27-8 in the fourth quarter.
Bethany Lutheran scored 23 of its 63 points off of Elmhurst's 27 turnovers.
Elmhurst's
Taylor Harazin earned a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.Â
Marissa Mussatto added nine points and six rebounds, while
Katie Matrise chipped in eight points.
The Vikings were led in scoring by Hanna Geistfeld who had 18 points and seven boards in the win. Sara Kottke chipped in 14 points, including three three-pointers, and five rebounds, while Taryn Christensen was just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Bluejays just barely outshot the Vikings 34 percent (18-of-53) to 33.8 percent (23-of-68).
Elmhurst is back in action tomorrow at day two of the North Park Tournament when it takes on the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.
