Bluejays Tripped Up by Stevens Point

WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst University volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the Wheaton College Quadrangular. 

UW-Stevens Point (18-4) came away with the 25-22, 25-22, 13-25, 25-17 win over Elmhurst (9-10). 

The Pointers opened up an early six-point lead in the opening set before Elmhurst battled back to pull to within a point at 21-20. The Pointers won the next three points to set up multiple set points. The Bluejays fought off a pair of set points before falling 25-22. 

Elmhurst led 15-13 midway through the second set before Stevens Point rattled off a 7-1 run to move in front at 20-16. THe Bluejays battled back to pull even at 22-all, but three straight kills from Ashley Kopp gave the Pointers the set. 

Elmhurst broke open a 5-5 tie in the third set with a 14-2 run, taking a commanding 19-7 lead before cruising to the 25-13 victory. 

The fourth set was even at 15-all before UW-STevens Point closed the set on a 10-2 run to seal the match. 

Elmhurst hit .137 with 40 kills and 21 errors in 139 attempts. Elise Rossing led the Bluejays in the loss with 11 kills. Jada Wiley added nine kills while Emily Duis finished with nine kills and six blocks. Taylor Zurliene finished with six kills and 11 digs while Erin Murray tallied 32 assists, 15 digs and three blocks. Valerie Thomas (12), Emily Finkbeiner (13) and Payton Ceh (10) all reached double figures in digs for the Bluejays.

Kopp powered UW-Stevens Point, totaling 23 kills and seven digs. Emma Peterson led the squad in digs with 20 while Grace Michalske tallied 40 assists and 12 digs. 

Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Wednesday, October 13.
