Bluejays Edge Carroll in Final Seconds

ELMHURST, ILL.- Kelly Weyhrich hit a driving layup with just six second remaining to lift the Elmhurst women's basketball team to a 65-64 win over Carroll. The Bluejays evened their record at 1-1 with the victory.  

In the first quarter the Bluejays shot 9-of-12 from the field and went on a 7-0 run to build an early 10-point lead.  Courtney O'Donnell and Elena Cabrera combined for 13 of Elmhurst' 20 points in the first quarter, as the Bluejays led Carroll (1-1) 20-13 after 10 minutes After a back-and-forth second quarter, the Bluejays held a 33-28 lead heading into the locker room.

After both squads drained six of their seven free throws in the third quarter, Elmhurst held a 53-49 leading entering the final quarter. Carroll's Kate Christian hit a bucket with 10 seconds left to put the Pioneers in front 64-63, setting the stage for the Weyhrich and the Bluejays. Weyhrich split her defender and drove down the left side of the paint, hitting a layup with six seconds left and putting the Bluejays up by one. The Pioneers missed a shot in the closing seconds and Courtney O'Donnell secured the rebound to run out the clock.

Cabrera had an impressive game knocking down four of her six 3-point attempts, leading the Bluejays with a career-high 22 points to go with three rebounds. O'Donnell shot 75 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line, totaling 18 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Harazin's added four points and 10 rebounds while Weyhrich finished with six points and six assists. Elmhurst shot (24-of-52) 46 percent from field and 70 percent from the foul line on the day.

The Pioneers were led by Christian's 17 points and nine rebounds. Elizabeth Berhndt shot 7-of-8 from the field, totaling 15 points and adding five rebounds of her own. Kayla Stefka added 13 points and eight rebounds. Carroll shot 39 percent (24-of-61) while only making one of their 16 3-point attempts.

The Bluejays will return to action Monday, February 1, 2021 at R.A. Faganel hall as they take on Augustana College at 7:00 p.m.
