MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Elmhurst men's tennis team moved to 2-2 on the season after splitting two contests in Iowa. The Bluejays fell 5-4 to Cornell College before defeating Simpson College 7-2.
CORNELL 5, ELMHURST 4 - The Bluejays dropped a hard-fought one-point decision to Cornell to drop to 1-2 on the season. Elmhurst split the six singles matches but Cornell won two of the three doubles contests to take the victory.
In doubles play, Shoma Kishimoto and Hayden Dzurisin defeated Elmhurst's
Tomas Bella and
Shawn Sabaricos 8-7 at No. 1 doubles. The Bluejays' Brandon Fullmer and
Grant O'Connell defeated Alejandrao Colorado and Drew Arnold 8-1 at No. 2 while the Rams' duo of Nick Adamou and Koichi Okazaki toppled
Tavious Imperial and
Reid Bertsche 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles play, Kishimoto defeated Bella 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 1 while Dzurisin followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sabaricos at No. 2. Adamou defeated O'Connell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. The Bluejays won Nos 4-6 with
Florin Stan downing Arnold 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Fullmer defeated Colorado 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 while Bertsche scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Okazaki at No. 6.
ELMHURST 7, SIMPSON 2 - Elmhurst rebounded from their loss to defeat Simpson 7-2 and even its record at 2-2. The Bluejays won five of the six singles contests and two of the three doubles matches.
Sabarico and Bella defeated Reade Reiter and Brett Deweriff 8-3 at No. 1 while O'Connell and Fullmer toppled Matt Turnley and Ethan Humble 8-2 at No. 2.
In singles play, Bella blanked Reiter 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 while Sabaricos upended Dewerff 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Stan scored a 7-5, 4-6, 10-3 win over Aaron Price at No. 4 while Fullmer defeated Humble 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 at No. 5. Bertsche closed out singles play with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over Caleb Vasconez at No. 3.
