Bluejays Top Carroll 87-78 in OT

ELMHURST, ILL. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team completed the season sweep over Carroll University, defeating the Pioneers 87-78 in overtime at R.A. Faganel Hall.

In the first quarter both teams found themselves in a back and forth battle, but Elmhurst (9-14/4-10 CCIW) came out on top 23-21 headed into the second quarter. Carroll (8-14/3-10 CCIW) kept it close for most of the second quarter until Elmhurst stretched their lead to 40-33 before the end of the first half.

The Bluejays were able to hold their lead in the third quarter and found themselves up by 10 points headed into the final quarter 62-52. The Pioneers popped off a 13-0 run after being down by 15 points with eight minutes left in the game to pull to within two. The Bluejays moved in front at 72-70 after Lauren Goff made both of her free throws with 35 seconds left. Carroll pushed the ball down the court and responded with a tying layup to send the game into overtime at 72-72.

Elmhurst began to pull away with about 1:30 left in the extra period, leading Carroll 81-76. The Pioneers could not rally back as the Bluejays held on to win their second consecutive contest.

Sophia Lathe, Kween Jean and Courtney O'Donnell led the Bluejays, finishing with 16 points apiece and combining for 12 rebounds. Marissa Urso helped her squad by scoring 13 points and knocking down all six of her free throw attempts. Elmhurst shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from the three-point line, and 72.2 percent (26-of-36) from the free throw line.

The Pioneers were led by Brooke Fosters' 21 points and seven rebounds. Katie Evans' finished with 17 points and four rebounds. Alyssa Cruz added 13 points and eight rebounds on the night. Carroll shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field, 31.3 percent (10-of-32) from the three-point line, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free throw line.

Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Saturday, February 15.
