WAUKESHA, WIS.- The Elmhurst women's basketball squad picked up a conference victory by edging Carroll 56-55.
Marissa Urso scored a layup while getting fouled with two seconds left in the game to give the Bluejays their first conference win of the season.
In the first quarter, Elmhurst (6-6) went on a 7-0 run to finish with a two-point lead headed into the second quarter (13-11). The Pioneers (5-7) started to generate a lead midway through the second quarter, leading the Bluejays by seven points headed into the locker room (28-21).
Courtney O'Donnell led the Bluejays with eight points and eleven rebounds in the first half.
The Bluejays shortened the Pioneers lead by going on a 9-0 run towards the end of the third quarter. O'Donnell's rebound and put-back layup as time expired pulled the Bluejays within two points headed into the fourth quarter (39-37). Both teams battled throughout the fourth quarter until the Pioneers took a four-point lead with a little over a minute left to play.
Sophia Lathe made a 3-point shot with 16 seconds left to bring the Bluejays to within one (55-54). During the Pioneers' following possession,
Lauren Goff stole the ball and dished to Urso. Urso made a layup and was fouled with two seconds left to take a 56-55 lead. She missed the free throw attempt but the Bluejays would hold on to take home the conference victory.
O'Donnell finished with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Elmhurst on the day.
Kween Jean also finished with a double-double, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds. Urso assisted the Bluejays by recording eight points and one rebound. The Bluejays shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field and 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from the three-point line.
The Pioneers were led by Sierra Grubor's 13 points and six rebounds. She was assisted by Megan Madson's nine points and three rebounds. Kayla Stefka added eight points and three rebounds. The Pioneers shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from the 3-point line.
The Bluejays will return to action on Wednesday January 8, 2019 when they travel to Augustana College in a CCIW matchup at 7:00 P.M.
