Dotlich's Heave Lifts Bluejays Past Carroll in 2OT

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Derek Dotlich connected on a 40-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to lead the Elmhurst men's basketball to an 82-81 road win in double overtime against Carroll University.

Elmhurst, ranked 16th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW with the victory. Carroll slipped to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The back-and-forth affair featured 12 ties and 23 lead changes.

Elmhurst scored the first five points of the contest, but Carroll quickly moved in front and the Bluejays played from behind for the majority of the final 10 minutes of the opening half. The Pioneers led by as many as seven points with 2:30 remaining in the half, but Elmhurst cut the deficit down to just two points (29-27) at halftime.

Carroll led for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the two teams began to trade buckets and leads. Elmhurst opened up a five-point advantage with six minutes remaining, but Carroll moved back in front by two with 2:52 left. The Bluejays moved back in front 61-60 following a pair of Jake Rhode free throws, but Carroll split a pair of free throws to tie the contest with 1:30 left. Both teams misfired on their final possessions to send the game to overtime.

Elmhurst grabbed a 63-59 lead with just 1:13 left in the first overtime but a pair of Charlie Soule buckets, including a putback with just six seconds left, tied the game at 69-all and forced a second overtime.

In the second OT, the Bluejays moved in front on a Dotlich three-pointer with 2:14 left, but a three-pointer from Tarren Hall and a jumper from Ryan Clarey put the Pioneers up by three with 37 seconds left. Elmhurst cut the deficit down to one on a layup from Jay Miltello, but Carroll broke Elmhurst's press leading to a layup from Hall and giving the Pioneers a three-point lead at 80-77. Rather than play for a three, the Bluejays cut the deficit down to one on a Dominic Genco layup with 11 seconds left.

Elmhurst fouled Hall with five seconds left. Hall went to the line and hit the first free throw to give Carroll an 81-79 lead. He missed the second with the Bluejays collecting the rebound and giving the ball to Dotlich. Dotlich dribbled across midcourt and let a 40-footer fly just before the buzzer. His heave went straight through the net and touched off an Elmhurst celebration.

The Bluejays shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor, including 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from beyond the arc. Carroll finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (30-of-70) from the field but only 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point distance.

Dotlich led Elmhurst and all scorers with a game-high 26 points. Rhode finished with 21 points and eight assists while Lavon Thomas totaled a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Genco came off the bench to score 10 for Elmhurst.

Clarey led the Pioneers in the loss with 20 points while Soule scored 18. Blake Williams totaled a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
