ELMHURST, ILL.- The Elmhurst women's basketball team fell short to North Park 80-75 .
In the first quarter, Elmhurst (6-8) shot 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from the field while North Park (11-3) shot 46.2 percent (6-of-13). Headed into the second quarter the Bluejays found themselves trailing by three points (16-13). In the second quarter, Elmhurst edged North Park 20-16, making seven of their eight free throws.
Mia Riese hit a jump shot from
Marissa Urso with four seconds left to give the Bluejays a one-point lead headed into the locker room at halftime.
The Bluejays got into foul trouble to start the second half and the Vikings were able to build a 10-point lead midway through the third quarter. After a last second jump shot by Angelina Villisan, the Vikings lead 57-47 headed into the fourth quarter. Elmhurst was able to cut North Parks lead down to four points but it was not enough to complete the comeback as the Vikings picked up their fourth conference win at 80-75.
Kween Jean led the Bluejays with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Wehyrich shot 5-of-8 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 from the foul line while recording 17 points and one rebound for Elmhurst.
Elena Cabrera added eight points and seven rebounds to help lead the Bluejays. Elmhurst shot 47.3 percent (28-of-51) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the three-point line.
The Vikings were led by Jayla Johnsons' double -double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Czuhajewski and Zakiya Newsome each added 11 points on the day to help lead the North Park. The Vikings shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from the 3-point line.
The Bluejays will return to action next Wednesday January 15, 2020 when they host Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00 P.M.
