ELMHURST, Ill.- The Elmhurst women's basketball team dropped its conference matchup against Illinois Wesleyan 71-46.
In the first quarter both teams battled back-and-forth to find themselves in a tied game 11-11. Illinois Wesleyan (11-4/5-1 CCIW) built a nine-point lead with 2:30 left to play in the first half. Elmhurst (6-9/1-5 CCIW) bounced back before the end of the second quarter and cut the Titan lead down to just four points (27-23) at halftime.
After two Titan buckets to start the third quarter, the Bluejays chipped away and tied the game up at 38-38 midway through the third. Illinois Wesleyan responded by going on a 11-point run to end the third quarter building a 49-38 lead in the process. The Bluejays were outscored 22-8 in the fourth quarter, falling to the Titans 71-46.
The Bluejays were led by
Lauren Goff's 12 points and three rebounds on the night.
Lily Greifenstein helped lead Elmhurst by scoring 10 points and knocking down all four of her free throws.
Kelly Weyhrich and
Becca Gerke each added six points and a combined five rebounds on the night. Elmhurst shot 26.2 percent(16-of-61) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the three-point line, and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the foul line.
The Titans were led by Kendall Sosa's 19 points and four rebounds. Catie Eck added 16 points and three rebounds. Brooke Lansford and Riley Brovelli each scored 10 points each while combining for 15 rebounds on the night. Illinois Wesleyan shot 40.8 percent (29-of-71) from the field, 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the foul line, and 30 percent (6-of-20) from beyond the arc.
The Bluejays will return to action on Saturday, January 18, 2020) when they travel to play Wheaton College at 5:00 P.M.
