BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball brought the tying run to the plate before its ninth inning rally came up just short in a 6-4 loss at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Illinois Wesleyan (16-15, 9-8 CCIW) scored a run in the first, capitalizing on an an Elmhurst passed ball, to take a 1-0 lead. Elmhurst (9-22, 3-14 CCIW) scored a run on a double-play grounder to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning.
IWU moved in front in the seventh inning, taking a 3-1 lead after Nick Figus' two-run double. The Titans took advantage of a pair of Elmhurst errors in the eighth to score three unearned runs and open up a 6-1 lead in the process.
Elmhurst made one last push in the ninth inning, cashing in on an IWU error to plate three runs.
Lorenzo Farino started the scoring with a pinch hit single.
Trey Compton knocked in a run to make the score 6-3. Elmhurst added a run on a Titans' throwing error. The Bluejays brought the tying run to the plate but a strikeout ended the game.
Jordan Scrimpsher led Elmhurst at the plate with three hits. Figus drove in three runs to lead the Titans.
Alex Kielion made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst. Kielion tossed 6.2 innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs. He walked two and struck out one. Rory Mulvihill earned the win for the Titans in relief. Jacob Houghton picked up the save for IWU.
Elmhurst will host the Titans in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 28.
