CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team came up just short in a pair of losses at the Spring Games in Florida. The Bluejays fell 6-5 to Oberlin College to start the day before falling 4-2 to St. Catherine University to close the day.
Elmhurst moved to 5-6 on the season with the two losses.
OBERLIN 6, ELMHURST 5 - Oberlin scored five runs in the fourth inning to jump out to a lead and then held off a late rally to topple Elmhurst 6-5.Â
Oberlin scored a run in the top of the first, but Elmhurst jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on an RBI single from
Mia Riese and adding a second run on
Veronica Zahn's steal of home.Â
Oberlin broke things open in the fourth inning, scoring five times to take a 6-2 lead. Emma Downing delivered the big blow for Oberlin with a three-run homer.Â
Elmhurst answered back in the sixth, plating three runs to pull to within a run. The Bluejays put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop-up ended the game and Elmhurst's rally.Â
Elmhurst outhit Oberlin 10-7 but the Bluejays left 11 runners on base in the contest.
Mia Tran, Alex Ramos, Riese and Zahn totaled two hits apiece in the contest to lead Elmhurst at the plate.Â
Jenna Hicks made the start for Elmhurst and allowed five hits and five runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Bailee Krantz pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just just one hit and one walk while striking out one.Â
ST. CATHERINE 4, ELMHURST 2 - Elmhurst was limited to just four hits in a 4-2 loss to St. Catherine. Elmhurst's record in Florida slipped to 5-4 with the loss.Â
St. Catherine scored twice in the bottom of the first and added a run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Elmhurst got a run back in the fourth on
Rebekah Ondracek's RBI double, but St. Catherine answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth, pushing its lead back to three in the process.Â
Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, but Elmhurst managed just one run on a walk to
Mia Riese. The Bluejays hit into three fielder's choices in the inning, including two that resulted in a runner being forced out at home.Â
Sydni Gizynski took the loss for Elmhurst, working four innings and allowing seven hits and four runs.
Emily Despain pitched the final two innings for the Bluejays, allowing just three hits while striking out three.Â
Elmhurst closes out its Florida road trip with games against UW-Eau Claire and Middlebury on Wednesday, March 27.Â
