CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team upped its record to 5-4 on the season after sweeping a pair of contests at the Spring Games in Florida. Elmhurst blanked Union College 7-0 to start the day and capped the day with a 3-1 win over Buffalo State University.
ELMHURST 7, UNION 0 - Bailee Krantz held Union scoreless for six innings and the Elmhurst bats banged out 10 hits in a 7-0 shutout over Union.
Val Perrelli broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the fourth. Alex Ramos doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth and
Alyssa Ressinger followed with a run-scoring single.
Veronica Zahn completed the Bluejays' scoring with a two-run single in the sixth.
Zahn, Ramos and Perrelli all drove in two runs apiece in the victory.
Krantz made the start and limited Union to only four hits in six innings of work. Krantz walked two and fanned one while improving to 2-0 on the season. Jenna Hicks pitched a perfect seventh inning as the Bluejays notched their first shutout of the season.
ELMHURST 3, BUFFALO STATE 1 - Elmhurst won its fifth game on its Florida road trip with a 3-1 win over Buffalo State.
Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on
Mia Riese's RBI single. Buffalo State pulled even with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Ramos put the Bluejays back in front in the fifth with a run-scoring groundout.
Mia Tran tacked on an insurance run for Elmhurst in the sixth.
Tran, Zahn, Riese, Jakie Orel and
Julianna Bauer finished with two hits apiece in the victory.
Emily Despain picked up her third win of the season from the circle. Despain (3-1) went 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run.
Sydni Gizynski finished up in relief, scattering two hits while striking out two in the 2.1 innings of work.
Elmhurst takes on Oberlin and St. Catherine on Monday, March 25.
