Bluejays Soar Past Carroll in Fourth Quarter

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team outscored Carroll University 23-14 in the fourth quarter to score a 71-62 win over the Pioneers at R.A. Faganel Hall.

The win moved Elmhurst's record to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in the CCIW. More importantly, it bumped the Bluejays up to fifth-place in the CCIW standings as the top six teams in the league qualify for the league's postseason tournament. Elmhurst and North Central both have identical 5-8 records and hold a one-game lead over both Millikin and North Park.

Elmhurst built a 17-14 lead after the first quarter after the lead changed hands three times in the early going. The Bluejays led by as many as 10 points late in the second quarter, building a 29-19 lead sparked by a 7-0 run. Carroll (9-14/4-14) sliced the lead down to three points with less than a minute remaining in the half, but a three-pointer from Elena Cabrera and a free throw from Lisa Logan gave Elmhurst a 33-26 lead at the half.

The Bluejays pushed their lead up eight early in the third quarter before Carroll ripped off a 12-0 run over 3:30 to open up a 41-37 lead. A Marissa Urso three-pointer and a free throw from Cabrera pulleve Elmhurst even at 41-all with three minutes to play in the third. The score was deadlocked at 48-48 after 30 minutes of action. Elmhurst built a five-point cushion early in the fourth only for Carroll to respond with a 9-3 run and grab a 58-57 lead after a free throw from Katie Rossetti.

A layup from Urso with 4:33 remaining put Elmhurst up for good as the Bluejays ignited a 10-0 run to grab a 68-58 lead with two minutes remaining, putting the game out of reach in the process.

Elmhurst cashed in on Carroll mistakes, converting 24 Pioneer turnovers into 29 points. Elmhurst's bench also outscored Carroll's bench 29-7 in the contest.
