WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's tennis team slipped to 1-1 on the season after dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Wartburg College at Wheaton Sports Center.
Elmhurst and Wartburg split the six singles matches while Wartburg took two of the three doubles contests. Four of the nine matches went to tiebreakers to decide the winner.
In doubles play,
David Demoll and
Shawn Sabaricos edged Lucas Huffman and Will McDonald 8-6 at No. 1. Wartburg's Sam Nettleton and Nate Kolz downed the Bluejays' duo of
Grant O'Connell and Lance Mahary 8-4 at No. 2. Wartburg's Grant Kincaid and Jonathan Lansink edged
Chris Wallace and
Tavious Imperial 8-7 at No. 3 doubles.
Elmhurst won all three singles matches that went to a tiebreaker. Demoll rallied from a set down to toppled Huffman 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (10-4). Sabaricos downed Nettleton 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (10-6) at No. 2 singles. Maharry recorded the team's final win at No. 6 singles, rallying for a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8) win over Ben Mason at No. 6 singles.
Elmhurst takes on Wabash College on February 23.
