ELMHURST, Ill.- The Elmhurst women's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season, falling to Carthage College 66-49.
The Bluejays (3-4/ 0-1 CCIW) slow start in the beginning of the game allowed Carthage (4-3/1-0 CCIW) to go on a 15-point run that gave the Lady Reds a commanding 21-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Reds went on a six-point run to start the second quarter and headed into the locker room with a 22-point lead (41-19) at halftime.
The Bluejays started to chip away at the Carthage lead but still found themselves down by 16 points at the end of the third quarter. In the beginning of the fourth quarter the Bluejays were able to drop the Lay Reds' lead to 13 points but could not hold Carthage's offense for the remainder of the game.
Becca Gerke led the Bluejays shooting 6-of-12 from the field, totaling 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lily Greifenstein shot 50 percent from behind the ark and recorded 12 points on the night.
Kween Jean helped lead the Bluejays with nine points and five rebounds. The Bluejays bench outscored the Lady Reds 28-14 but Elmhurst shot only 30.4 percent from the field.
The Lady Reds were led by Autumn Kalis who shot 6-of-10 from behind the ark, recorded 22 points and eight rebounds on the night. Maggie Berigan and Kelsey Coshun added 10 points and seven rebounds apiece. Carthage shot 45.8 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The Bluejays will return to action on Saturday (December 7, 2019) when they travel to the University of Chicago at 1:00 P.M.
