Elmhurst Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball squad dropped its season-opener at home, falling to Loras College 94-59.
Elmhurst trailed by two points with four minutes left in the first quarter, but Loras (1-0) went on a 12-0 run to put the Duhawks up 25-13 heading into the second quarter. Loras did not let up, extending their lead to 15 points midway through the second quarter. The Bluejays were able to chip away at the Duhawks' lead in the last few minutes of the half and headed into the locker room down 44-34.
At the half way point of the third quarter the Bluejays cut Loras' lead down to only six points, trailing 51-45. The Duhawks answered back by going on a 11-3 run in the last four minutes of the third to take a 17-point cushion going into the fourth.
Loras blew the game open by scoring the first 17 points of the fourth quarter, doubling their lead to 34 points with six minutes left in the game.
The Bluejays' were led by
Marissa Urso's 15 points,
Becca Gerke's 12 points and seven rebounds, and
Jocelyn Jacob's nine points (3-12).
Lauren Goff added eight points for the Bluejays while
Anna Hill scored seven.
The Duhawks' were led by Macenzie Kraemer's 25 points (9-of-12 shooting), Kari Fitzpatrick's 15 points and seven rebounds, and Marissa Schroeder's' 16 points and five rebounds.
Loras went 60 percent (35-of-58) from the field topping Elmhurst's' 33 percent (18-of-55). The Duhawks' bench outscored the Bluejays 31-9 on the day. The Bluejays connected on nine three-pointers, but finished the contest shooting just 29.0 percent (9-of-31) from downtown. Elmhurst committed 22 turnovers in the loss and Loras took advantage, cashing in for 31 points off of the Bluejays' turnovers.
Elmhurst hosts Aurora University on Wednesday, November 13, at 7:00 p.m.
