BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's tennis team edged Illinois Wesleyan University 5-4 to pick up its first win of the 2019 campaign.
Elmhurst (1-6, 1-3/CCIW) trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but the Bluejays won four of the six singles matches to earn the victory.
In doubles play, Elmhurst's No. 1 duo of 
Ysabel Gonzaga and 
Dacey Maglaque blanked IWU's Rebecca Rochacz and Ashley Mohr 8-0. IWU's Alessia Girardin and Caitlyn Smith toppled the Bluejays' pairing of 
Bailey Ekstrand and 
June Bering 8-1 at No. 2. The Titans' Autumn See and Andrea Zulawski narrowly tipped 
Lindsey McAuliffe and 
Silvia Barak 8-7 at No. 3 to give IWU a 2-1 lead after doubles matches.
In singles play, McAuliffe blaned Smith 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 to even the score at 2-2. Bering closed out Zulawski 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6 to put Elmhurst up 3-2. Mohr toppled Maglaque 6-2 ,6-2 at No. 3 to pull IWU even, but Gonzaga dispatched Rochacz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 to push the Bluejays in front 4-3. Barak sealed the victory for the Bluejays with a win at No. 5. Barak rallied from a set down to defeat See 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Girardin edged Ekstrand in three sets at No. 2 (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) to make the final score 5-4 in favor of the Bluejays.
Elmhurst plays at Millikin University on Saturday, October 5.
