Bluejays Fall to Carroll in Four Sets

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst volleyball team had its three-game winning stream snapped in a four-set loss to Carroll University.
 
Elmhurst dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the CCIW following a 19-25, 28-26, 17-25, 19-25 loss to the Pioneers.
 
Carroll (13-4, 2-0 CCIW) took an early 2-1 lead in the first and never trailed the rest of the way, leading by as many as eight points before cruising to the 25-19 victory. The second set was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than three points. Carroll moved in front 20-18 before Elmhurst pulled even at 23-23. A kill from Kayla Mast gave Elmhurst a set point, but Carroll fought it off and canceled out a second set-point from Elmhurst at 25-24. The Pioneers went in front 26-25, but a service error leveled the set at 26-all. Kills from Mast and Kaye Lesure gave the Bluejays the set at 28-26.
 
Carroll scored the first points of the third set and never looked back. The Pioneers scored seven of the first 10 points and opened up a commanding eight-point cushion at 20-12 en route to the 25-17 win. The fourth set proved to be tighter with Carroll leading 13-12 after the first 25 points. The Pioneers used a 6-2 run to extend their lead to five points at 19-14 before pulling away for the 25-19 victory.
 
Elmhurst hit .108 for the contest with 49 kills and 31 errors in 166 swings. Payton Froats led the Bluejays' offense with 10 kills while also totaling two blocks. Mast and Taylor Zurliene added nine kills apiece for Elmhurst while Bailey Brouwer totaled seven. Zurliene and Valerie Thomas finished as the co-leaders in digs with 20 apiece. Kelly Townsend tallied a team-high 22 assists to go with 13 digs while Katie Davis chipped in with 13 assists and three blocks.
 
Carroll hit .228 for the match with 53 kills and just 16 errors in 162 attacks. Three players reached double figures in kills, led by Kylie Mueller's 11. Karley Wolf and Erika Dunham added 10 kills apiece for the Pioneers.
 
Elmhurst plays at Wheaton College on Friday, September 28.
