KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Elmhurst's
Chiara Gaudio and
Ysabel Gonzaga turned in a strong performance while facing stiff competition at the ITA Central Regional hosted by Kalamazoo College.
After dropping their opening round match 8-0 to Kalamazoo's Caroline Norton and Madalyn Winarski, Gaudio and Gonazaga rebounded to post three consecutive victories in the back draw round, advancing all the way to the semifinals in the process. The pair opened the back draw round by defeating North Central's Diana Barcelata and Morgan House 8-6. The Bluejays' pair followed with am 8-5 win over Ohio Northern's Ashley Ochsenhirt and Mackenze Wills in the second round.Â
Gaudio and Gonzaga upended Oberlin's Maja Shaw and Rebecca Shiloff 8-3 to reach the semifinals of the back draw round. The pair's run came to an end in the semis after falling 8-3 to DePauw's Erin Freidrich and Amanda Showalter. The Bluejays' duo finished with a 3-2 overall record for the weekend.
Elmhurst's doubles team of
Rachel Rettger and
Kathryn Wheeler suffered an 8-3 loss to Washington's Grace Hederick and Brigitte Hodge in the round of 64. In the back draw, the duo fell 8-1 to Kalamazoo's Ella Knight and Maya Srkalovic.Â
In singles play, Gaudio won her opening round match, scoring a 7-5, 6-0 win over Kalamazoo's Sonal Bahl in the round of 128. Gaudio fell 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 64 to Kenyon's Margaret Sweeney.Â
Wheeler posted a 1-2 record in singles play for the tournament. Wheeler fell 6-4, 6-1 to Augustana's Kalli Majewski in the round of 128, but rebounded to defeat Sydney Simmons of Ohio Wesleyan 6-4, 6-0 in the back draw. Wheeler fell 6-0, 6-0 to Divya Sharma of Washington in the draw back second round.Â
Rettger and Gonzaga posted 0-2 records in singles play. Rettger fell 6-1, 6-0 to seventh-seeded Erika Oku of Kenyon in the round of 128. She suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Meryl Reams of Ohio Wesleyan in the back draw's first round. Gonzaga fell 6-0, 6-1 to Denison's Emma Alsup in the opening round before bowing out of the back draw with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Meagan Reese of John Carroll.
