RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team could not close out Dominican, falling on the road in five sets to the Stars.
Elmhurst (4-7) jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but Dominican (6-5) won the final two sets to pick up the victory. Dominican's winning scores were: 20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9.
Elmhurst raced out to a 20-9 lead in the opening set before Dominican surged back with a 9-2 run to pull to within four points at 22-18.Elmhurst pushed its lead back to five before putting the set away at 25-20.
The second set was even at 11-11 before Dominican used a 14-5 run to take the set and pull even at one set apiece. With the third set even at 18-18, the Bluejays ripped off seven consecutive points to take the set at 25-18.
Dominican surged out to a quick 10-6 lead in the fourth only for Elmhurst to pull even at 14-14. The score remained even at 18-18 before Dominican pulled away with a 7-4 run to to even the match at two sets apiece.
Elmhurst grabbed an early 5-2 lead, but the Stars battled back to pull even at 7-7. Dominican led 8-7 on the side change but Elmhurst evened the score at 9-9. The Stars scored the final six points of the set to put away the match.
Elmhurst hit .125 for the match with 44 kills and 23 errors in 168 attempts.
Molly Brennan paced Elmhurst in the loss with 11 kills and two blocks.
Bailey Brouwer added 10 kills and 13 digs while
Taylor Zurliene totaled nine kills and 17 digs.
Kelly Townsend finished with 16 digs and a team-leading 28 assists
Valerie Thomas recorded a team-high 22 digs while
Emily Duis led the team in blocks with six.
Amanda Ricca paced Dominican with 15 kills while Stephanie Cole finished with 14 and Gillian Jones added 12.
Elmhurst plays at Illinois Wesleyan University on September 18.
