FOREST GROVE, Ore - The Elmhurst volleyball team concluded its trip to the Oregon Trail Tournament by falling to Whitman College and Pacific University.
Elmhurst (0-4) dropped its day two opener to Whitman 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 20-25 before falling to Pacific 25-13, 25-18, 25-11 in its final match of the tournament.
Bailey Brouwer was named to the all-tournament squad for her play over the two days.Â
WHITMAN 3, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst dropped its opening match of day two, falling in four sets to Whitman.Â
The Bluejays grabbed an early lead in the opening set and held a 20-19 lead, but Whitman pulled even at 23-23. An error on Elmhurst and an ace from Elyse Benavides gave Whitman the opening set. Whitman opened the second set on a 6-1 run and never trailed, cruising to the 25-19 win.Â
Elmhurst battled back in the third. With the score even at 15-15, the Bluejays seized control with a 4-0 run. Whitman closed to within two points at 22-20, but Elmhurst rattled off three straight points to take the third set. The Bluejays built a 15-13 lead in the fourth set, but Whitman closed out the set on a 12-5 run to take the set and the match.Â
Bailey led Elmhurst in the loss with 18 kills while hitting .317.
Ellie Burzlaff added nine kills while
Emily Duis finished with seven.
Kelly Townsend tallied 22 assists while
Katie Davis finished with 19.
Rachel Shuty led Elmhurst in digs with 14 while
Selene Ushela added 11 for the Bluejays.Â
PACIFIC 3, ELMHURST 0 - Elmhurst fell in three sets to the day two tournament hosts to wrap up the Bluejays' stay in Oregon.Â
Elmhurst grabbed an early 7-4 lead in the opening set, but Pacific used a 10-0 run to open up a seven-point cushion before cruising to a 25-13 win. The Boxers grabbed an early lead in the second set before Elmhurst pulled even at 18-18. Pacific won the final seven points of the set, aided by five straight errors by the Bluejays, to go up by two sets.Â
Pacific scored nine of the first 10 points in the third set before pulling away for the 25-11 victory, wrapping up the match in the process.Â
Brouwer posted another double-digit total in kills, finishing with 10. Townsend totaled 12 assists while Shuty led the squad in digs with 13.
Taylor Zurliene added 10 digs for the Bluejays.Â
Elmhurst plays its 2018 home opener by hosting Lake Forest College on Tuesday, September 4.Â
