Bluejays Split Pair With Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team split a doubleheader at Augustana College, dropping game one 12-2, but rebounding to take the night cap 5-2.

Elmhurst moved to 6-14 overall and 1-5 in the CCIW while Augustana upped its record to 15-7 overall and 2-2in league play.
 
AUGUSTANA 12, ELMHURST 2 (Game One) – Augustana utilized the long ball to stop Elmhurst 12-2 in game one.

The Vikings smacked four home runs in the contest, scoring eight of their 12 runs off homers.
 
Augustana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Klahn. A solo homer from Haley Ruch and a two-run homer from Marissa Catalano in the third gave the Vikings a 4-0 lead.
 

A two-run homer from Zayne Blumberg sparked a three-run fourth inning for the Vikings. Elmhurst scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. Alyssa Ressinger put the Bluejays on the scoreboard with a RBI double and Tara Cannella added a run-scoring single to account for the Bluejays final run.

The Vikings scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away in the sixth on a three-run homer from Klahn.

Cannella, Faith Thompson and Veronica Zahn finished with two hits apiece to lead Elmhurst at the plate.
 
Stephanie Sturino made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst. Sturino worked 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs. She walked five while striking out two. Alivia Phelps led Augustana from the circle, tossing a complete game while scattering nine hits and two runs. She walked one and fanned three.
 
ELMHURST 5, AUGUSTANA 2 (Game Two) – Alyssa Ressinger homered and Emily Despain pitched a complete game to lead Elmhurst to a 5-2 win over the Vikings in game two.
 
Augustana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after the Vikings took advantage of an Elmhurst error to score an unearned run. The Vikings' lead did not last long as Ressinger put the Bluejays in front 2-1 with a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the first.
 
The Vikings scored another unearned run in the top of the second to pull even at 2-2, but Veronica Zahn singled home a run in bottom of the second to put Elmhurst up 4-2 after an Augustana error allowed another run to score on the play.
 
Val Perrelli drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth to give Elmhurst the three-run victory.
 
Despain picked up her fourth win of the season while tossing a complete game. She allowed just five hits and two unearned runs. She walked one and struck out three.
 
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University tomorrow (April 8).
