ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team had its eight-game win streak snapped after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Millikin University. Elmhurst fell 9-2 in game one and dropped the night cap 9-6.
Elmhurst fell to 14-18 overall and 5-9 in league play while Millikin improved to 19-13 overall and 6-8 in the CCIW.
MILLIKIN 9, ELMHURST 2 (Game One) – Millikin banged out 14 hits while scoring a 9-2 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Millikin scored a run in the first, but Elmhurst answered back in the bottom of the frame, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run single from
Faith Thompson.
Millikin went in front 3-2 in the third inning on a two-run homer from Alyssa Vogler. The Big Blue added a run in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2. A four run outburst in the fifth inning helped Millikin blow the game open and cruise to the seven-run victory.
Elmhurst stranded nine runners on base in the loss.
Emily Despain took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 13 hits and eight runs while striking out two.
MILLIKIN 9, ELMHURST 6 (Game Two) – Elmhurst mounted a seventh-inning rally, but it came up short in a 9-6 loss in game two.
The Bluejays grabbed a quick 2-0 lead after RBIs from
Rebekah Ondracek and
Alyssa Ressinger in the first inning. Millikin answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. The Big Blue tacked on two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-2.
Elmhurst cut the lead down to four on an RBI groundout from Thompson in the sixth, but Millikin tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-3 lead into the seventh. Elmhurst scored runs on a
Veronica Zahn double, a sac fly from Ondracek and a double from Ressinger to make the score 9-6, but a fly out ended the game and gave Millikin the win
Ressinger led Elmhurst at the plate with three hits and two RBIs. Ondracek added two hits and knocked in two while Zahn and
Stephanie Sturino also collected two hits apiece for Elmhurst.
Baille Krantz made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst, working five innings and allowing 13 hits and seven runs.
Elmhurst plays at Carroll University on Saturday, April 28.
